The “little black dress” is legendary in the fashion industry. Known for its classic and simple look, the LBD actually has quite the history.

1920s

Coco Chanel was the first designer to bring the little black dress to light in an issue of the American Vogue. This action changed the idea of black solely being worn for mourning purposes and reinvented it as a more chic option for women.

1930s

The little black dress grew in popularity with the help of Hollywood and movies. Many actresses were featured wearing the garments as wearing black looked better on screen for black and white films.

1950s

The notion of the LBD turned into one that was more risque. Women who wore them were seen as less innocent and wholesome. At the same time, they become more common and affordable due to the different materials they were being made from.

1960s

Black dresses got smaller as the younger generations wanted to wear shorter and more revealing clothes. The dresses became more revealing in other ways as well, with additions of slits in the skirts and sheerer fabrics.

1980s

The funkiness of the 80s transferred to the new styles of little black dresses. The designs became a little less simple and began incorporating other dress styles that were popular at that time.

1990s

While little black dresses remained a popular choice for evening wear, colour returned as a trend in fashion.  The LBD returned to simpler ways once again, some long and some short.

2000s

With body insecurity becoming so common, the little black dress has truly made its return as black is found to be the most flattering colour. The trend of simplicity has also made its return, making the LBD a go to option for all special events.

Top Tips to Survive TIFF 2018

If youre someone whose been attending TIFF for years, then chances are you have your strategies locked down. But for beginner TIFF goers, Max Agency decided to share our Top  TIFF Tips to Survive the 2018 festival!

Plan Your Schedule In Advance

The official schedule for TIFF 2018 movies was released to the public on August 21st. Since the festival does not begin until September, this gives you lots of time to plan which movies you want to see and at what times. This is recommended as once tickets go on sale, many of the screenings will sell out, especially if its highly anticipated! This also allows you to book time off of work if needed and know what times on the weekends to keep available!

Pack Smart

Attending the festival can take up a lot of time due to waiting in lines, waiting for red carpets, celebrity hunting or actually seeing films. Therefore, you must pack a bag that includes all the necessities! For example: snacks, sunscreen, portable charger, camera, water, something you want an actor to sign! Also dont forget to wear comfortable shoes as you could be on your feet for most of the day. These things are needed for a packed movie schedule or if you plan on waiting for red carpet or rush lines!

Be Open Minded Regarding Films

While it may be tempting to only see the films featuring the biggest Hollywood celebrities, we propose having an open mind to the other films TIFF has to offer. There are short films, documentaries, foreign films, etc. Take advantage of the festival and see films you wouldnt normally be able to see in theatres/ones that do not get wide releases. With so much variety to choose from, we dare you to step out of your comfort zone a little!

Take Advantage of Whats Available

With many different types of screenings happening at the festival, we encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity possible. Take note of which screenings have Q&As where you can ask a question to the director or cast. If a films sold out, stand in the rush line and make a day of it. Attend a red carpet to get a glimpse of the stars or maybe even an autograph. There is so much to do at TIFF, make sure you see it all.

Have Fun!

Cliché as it is, going into the festival with a positive attitude will make the experience so much better. Make friends with the people in line to make the time go by faster. Chat with the volunteers. Be friendly and make the most of the experience!

Good luck to all the TIFF attendees this year! Let us know what your #1 tip for attending the festival would be?
