Common Industry Terms

For todays blog, I thought Id explain some common industry terms.

1. Comp card (composite card): a models business card that contains valuable information such as height, age, weight, shoe size, clothing size, eye and hair color, body shot and head shot. It also contains your agencys information in case you are considered for booking.

Comp cards are crucial for a models career as they attend auditions and meet with important casting agents. It is common for agencies to have a fee to get your comp cards done upon registration. However, it is more of a career investment.

2. Go see: if you watched Americas next top model, you are familiar with this term whether your in the industry or not. A go see is essentially a model and client meeting to give a good first impression and to look through the models portfolio to see if the model has potential or not. If the go see goes well, and the client is impressed with the model, this could lead to future of work for the model.

3. Call time: this basically means the time you are required to show up for work.

4. Cold reading: for actors, this means having to read a script for the first time at an audition with no preparation or memorization.

5. Free lance: modeling or acting independently with no representation. This is not recommended as an agency is there to protect you from scams, makes sure you get paid in full, finds you work constantly and looks out for your best interest. Being independent is risky especially if you are a beginner.

Myths about the Modelling Agency

Here are the top three myths about the modelling industry:

1) Models dont eat.

– Ok, so a lot of bad stigma comes with the modelling industry because of this idea that models need to be paper thin. Yes, there is a lot of pressure to stay thin for models and with that comes eating disorders. However, nowadays, there is a new refined way to think of models. Now, since they are using celebrities on magazine covers who dont look like supermodels/who are super thin, people feel as though they can relate a lot better and not starve themselves to be super thin and look like those celebrities. Of course, models should watch their diets and exercise to maintain a healthy body but fear not! Curvy and voluptuous is the new way to be!

2) Models are picture perfect.

– Absolutely not! Ive got one word for you: PHOTOSHOP. Believe it or not, models DO get pimples, take bad pictures and have bad hair days…and it takes hours for them to get their hair and make up done! They need time to get all beautiful! Dont think that they wake up looking like superstars….No body does! It takes time and attention to look the way they do.

3) You have to be tall to be a model.

– Back in the day, height used to be a very important requirement. For runway especially. However today, it is less important then it was. Agencies are much more lenient with height. So if you are on the shorter side but think youve got what it takes to be a model… dont be shy!  Come visit our agency! Wed love to meet you!

The Importance of a Good Routine

To be at the top of your industry, it is crucial to have a consistent and efficient morning and night time routine. Here are some great steps to follow to maintain organization, hygiene and positivity throughout your day starting with your night time routine:

1) Before bed, it is truly important that you organize yourself for the next day. For example, pack a lunch and let it sit in the fridge overnight. That way, you are not rushing to do this in the morning and your not spending more on food that you already had at home! Also, picking out your outfit and setting it aside for the morning will help you save a lot of time in the morning. Dont forget to pick accessories and shoes people!

2) If you like to sleep in, taking a shower at night would definitely be the best option for you. Wash your face and brush your teeth too!

3) Pack your bag for tomorrow. Make sure you have everything you need for the next days events so that in the morning you can just grab it and go!

4) To keep organized, it may help to write down a list of things to do for the next day. We often tend to think about things that need to get done while we lay in bed trying to fall asleep. By jotting down your thoughts, you wont forget them and youll fall asleep a lot faster!

5) Finally, dont forget to set your alarm! Set it early enough to give you time to really wake up and feel energized before your day begins.

And remember, getting a good 8 hour sleep is recommended for the maintenance of good physical and mental health!

For your morning routine:

1) Wake up early enough to eat breakfast. This is utterly important! Eating a good nutritious breakfast will give you the energy you need to have throughout the day. Have more than just a cup of coffee!

2) Practice good hygiene. This is common sense, especially for those in the modelling/acting industry. Make sure you brush your pearly whites, wash your face thoroughly and shower if you didnt at night. Not only will you look good but you will feel refreshed and radiant too! Which is important for your confidence might I add.

3) This step is optional but highly recommended. Do something active to wake you up in the morning. Whether its yoga, a light jog, jumping jacks or even stretching. This will help you wake up feeling positive-minded throughout your day.

4) Make sure you go over your list from the night before and prioritize it efficiently! Get the important things done and out of the way first. Leave the easy and fun stuff for last… Think of leaving those easy and fun tasks for last as your reward for getting the hard tasks out of the way first. This will be motivating for you to complete your list and prevent procrastination.

5) Start your day by thinking about at least 10 things that you are grateful for, and 10 things that you love about yourself. Waking up to positive thoughts guarantees a happy mind and soul during your day.

Remember, when you have good vibes, other people will notice and will have a great first impression of you. In this industry, first impressions are key for success! So follow these steps and watch your success grow!
