Myths About Being An Actor/Model #OppositeDay

Today is #NationalOppositeDay, therefore MAX Agency will be sharing some facts that are the OPPOSITE of the truth about the acting/modelling industry. Hopefully we can bust some of the common myths surrounding the industry!

You have to pay an agency to represent you.

FALSE. You should not be paying an agency anything other than the agency fee that they take out of the work they get for you. Usually this is 20% of whatever you make. When you make money, they make money which is their motivation for getting you jobs.

You do not need to invest anything into your career as long as you have talent.

Wrong. Even if you do have the talent, agencies will not pay for your acting or modelling tools, such as photos/head shots, comp cards, etc. This is something you must invest your own money in to reap the rewards. This goes for small or large agencies around the world.

You must be tall to be a model.

Yes, there are certain requirements for being a traditional runway model. However, there is must more opportunity for different types of models for commercials, photoshoots, etc. where height is not as big of a factor.

You must be skinny to be a model.

In relation to the point above, the modelling world has been evolving for the past twenty years and nontraditional looks are becoming more mainstream. There are now extremely successful plus size models, such as Ashley Graham. While it may still be harder to make it as a thicker model, it is definitely possible!

You will find success right away.

Unfortunately this is not true. Many successful models and actors spend years auditioning without landing a gig or maybe doing small ones here or there before they make it big. A lot of actors never make it big but are still able to make a living. Do not be surprised if it takes a while before you start booking jobs, just keep pushing yourself to get better and honing your craft!

You are too old to start acting.

This statement is definitely the opposite of the truth. There are many successful actors who are over the age of 35 doing film, television and commercials. In fact, MAX Agency has some women over the age of 60 on our roster who have received numerous jobs over the last few years. Do not let your age keep you from this industry.

For many new actors and models seeking work in the industry, a question they face is whether or not to join an agency. While there may be some perks to self representation, MAX Agency would like to share our reasons we recommend joining a talent agency as an actor/model!

Your Safety

Having an agency submitting and booking you for projects ensures the legitimacy of the work. As professionals in the industry, they are aware of the reputable companies and clients who they work with on a regular basis. If you are finding work for yourself, you may get yourself into dangerous situations from people who are trying to take advantage of talent.

Agents will assist with all of your development needs including head shots, portfolios, acting classes, etc. They have connections with photographers for your photos and can advise which photos are the best to use in your portfolio. Industry Knowledge and Connections

Talent agents have important knowledge and connections about the acting/modelling industries. For example, they know what industry standard is for payment to make sure you get paid what you deserve. They also have working relationships with casting directors so that through them you will have access to the best jobs.

International Opportunities

Another perk to being a part of a professional talent agency is that they will have resources to provide large scale international opportunities. This results in higher exposure and payment.

It is their job and main priority to keep track of wardrobe, location, contact information, etc. and to pass along all relevant information to you.

Why You Should Pursue Your Acting/Modelling Dreams in 2019

Its a new year which means setting new goals for yourself and trying new things. If acting or modelling is one of those things youve been thinking of trying for years, then Max Agency is here to tell you why 2019 should be the year you finally go for it!

The sooner you start getting experience, the sooner you will find success.

It is common knowledge that becoming a successful actor or model can take many years for some people and not happen at all for others. This is why you should stop waiting and give it your best shot as soon as you can! Start taking part in local community projects, join an agency and start auditioning. You may not get auditions or jobs right away so putting yourself out there sooner than later is for the best.

There are roles available for any age range.

If your age is the thing holding you back, its time to forget that fear! There are constant new roles for children, teens and adults of all ages. For example, in the advertising industry there are products being targeted at all different ages of consumers and actors/models are needed to fill those roles. Television and film may star the young good looking person but they need other actors to play their parents or grandparents, etc.

New projects are being developed all of the time.

Everyday there are new projects being produced including commercial, print, theatre, film, etc. Think about all the commercials, advertisements or movies you see on a daily basis, there is a ton of work!

If you have a unique look.

There are many actors and models with similar looks out there so having something that makes you unique and stand out is great in the industry. Sometimes casting directors specifically want people with unique attributes such as freckles, dyed hair, tooth gaps, etc. Having a relatable look is also great as producers know the audience will have an easier time relating to you when they see you on screen!

You have some spare time that could go towards auditioning and shooting.

Acting and modelling is not always ideal if seeking a full time job. However, if you have a flexible schedule that would allow you to make auditions on short notices and take off a few days for shoots, then it would be a good fit for you! It does not have to be your full time focus, but could be something on the side to bring in extra cash flow.

You can get paid to travel.

While many of the projects that cast in Toronto are also filmed there, the higher budget ones will fly you to special destinations to film. This could be to other provinces in Canada, the USA or a more tropical destinations!
