MAX AGENCY TIP TUESDAY – CHILD AUDITIONS

#TipTuesday is a series MAX Agency — one of the top Toronto talent agencies  — does every week where we share helpful tips for the industry. This could be tips on auditions, bookings, beauty, fashion and more!

For any role, there can be up to hundreds of other talents auditioning.  For children, its important to offer key support.

What a special opportunity they’ve been given! It’s your responsibility to show them how fun the whole process can be, by remaining calm and up-beat no matter what happens.  Here’s how you can help them prepare–

1. Provide encouragement and positivity. Though your child will be excited when their agent calls with the good news, most actors will struggle with some degree of “nerves” as the big day approaches. You want to address any feelings of self-doubt by reminding them how far in the casting process they’ve already come. Now, the first big priority for you two will be to make sure your child is “off-book”. For a few pointers on how to help your little one memorize their lines, please see my video on memorizing lines quickly and thoroughly. The more thoroughly your child has absorbed the copy, the more they’ll be free to relax and just have fun in front of the camera. That’s gold to the casting director! After they’ve got their lines down, it’s time to do some research into the project: If it’s a commercial, go online to find out more about the product and the ad campaign. If it’s a TV show, watch a couple episodes to understand the style of acting it requires. For a film, try to watch more of the director’s work. Help your child bring whatever ideas their research gives them to their performance.

2. Do a little brush-up on audition etiquette and watch “How to slate with confidence.”

3. Parents, prepare yourself! Your preparation here is as important as your child’s. The entire day of the audition needs to be planned out from A to Z, to lessen the stress for both of you. The night before, take the time to look up the location (even if you have a GPS!) to find out how much time you’ll need to get there. Launder and iron the outfit they’ll be wearing if necessary, and check that their headshots and resumes are printed, stapled, and ready to go! And always keep headshots in the car!

4. Essential Needs for an audition (What to Bring): Make sure that they arrive at the audition well-fed and well-rested, with all the materials they’ll need in hand: sides, headshot/ resume, and maybe some homework to do while they wait. Pack some healthy snacks just in case the wait runs long. And don’t forget to give them a little pep-talk before they go in! Let your child know how talented and special they are, and that there’s no need to compare themselves to anyone else. All they need to do is relax, listen, have a good time, and just be themselves. They’ll do great!

GET YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP BEFORE AN AUDITION OR SHOOT

“Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together.” – Thomas Dekker

Everyone knows the expression “getting your beauty rest” and it is absolutely true! In order to look and feel your best, you need to get enough sleep at night.

Actors and models especially need to get their beauty sleep since they tend to have long working days that are all caught on camera. For this weeks Tip Tuesday, MAX Agency would like to give you all some advice regarding your sleep schedule to ensure you wake up looking and feeling your best before your big audition or shoot!

1. Adults need an average of 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Children and teens need even more than that. Pay attention to when youre going to bed and when youre waking up to make sure youre meeting these requirements to function your best along with allowing your skin to regenerate.

2. Remove your makeup before bed. Leaving your makeup on overnight results in facial issues such as acne.

3. Tie your hair up. Keeping your hair away from your face throughout the night will result in less tangles in the morning. Hair also contains oils that when rubbed against your face can cause acne.

4. Dry your hair before bed. There are shower-in-the-morning-people and shower-at-night-people. If you shower at night, make sure your hair is dry before going to bed as sleeping with damn hair can cause breakage. The moisture on your scalp and pillow can also cause bacteria to breed and cause acne.

5. Dont use electronics in bed. While very tempting to check Instagram before you fall asleep, staring at a screen right before bed will just keep you up. Place your phones and laptops away from your bed therefore you dont get distracted by every notification you receive throughout the night.

6. Create a bedtime routine. Create a routine of things to do before bed that avoid screens. Write in a journal, shower, catch up with your spouse/roommates, read, meditation, etc.

7. Keep a consistent bedtime. Going to bed at the same time every night will get your body and mind into a routine. You should find it easier to fall asleep.

Follow these tips and you should wake up looking and feeling your best to rock that audition or shoot!
