Toronto Acting Agency – Talent Spotlight- Stella D.

Our Talent Spotlight is for Stella D., who is a passionate actor and mother! She watched the movie Annie with her parents and knew what she wanted to do is sing and dance!

After numerous auditions, she gave up acting, but has now found the way back to her calling. She talked to us about her journey.

Stella D. – Toronto Actor and Model

Stella was very timid growing up, but when her fathers camcorder was on her during family events, she became a different person. Shed sing and put on shows. “It was like magic entered my body and I became alive”, she recalls.

She did not pursue this passion until, at 14 years old, she took modeling classes at Elenor Fulcher in Toronto. “I remember taking the subway by myself. I graduated but nothing came of it because at that time, there were height requirements to be a runway model and at 52″ no one would accept me. It was a great experience that got me out of my shell a bit.”

When she got older, she tried to pursue an acting career, but she faced obstacles. “Traveling from the small town where I lived, to Toronto almost on a daily basis for auditions took its toll on me. Not to mention I was a single mom with 3 mouths to feed and it was getting expensive.

I put my dreams on hold to raise my kids. I think I put my own obstacles in my way. I let fear control my emotions and used that as an excuse. I also thought I wasnt good enough being rejected time and time again, only getting a call back once. I stopped pursuing acting. “

Do you remember your first audition?

“Like it was yesterday. It was for a dell commercial. We were sitting in what was supposed to be an airplane. I got a callback for it. Didn’t end up getting the part but it was my first audition.”

How do you deal with rejection?

” I just do. I have a strong personality and thick skin. You have to in this industry. “

With her kids now off on their own, Stella has found her way back to acting and modeling. She first posed for her friend who was looking to advertise her boudoir photography, and that is when she realized that it is time to pursue her dreams.

During your break from acting, were there times when you felt it was missing from your life? If so, how did you deal with it?

“I missed it a lot. I knew at some point I’d get back to it. I didn’t realize it was going to be so late in life. I went to the gym, I joined a boxing and kick boxing class. In the end it was all worth it.”

How did it feel to get into this industry after so long? (Scary, exciting, intimidating, natural..) Tell me about your first acting class at Studio West, how did feel like to be doing this again?

“It was all of the above. Every emotion you can feel but mostly happy to finally get back into it. My first class with Alec (acting coach at Studio West) was nerve-wrecking but so much fun. He’s an amazing coach. I think it really helped me get out of my shell. I’m really shy and nervous to perform improv around people I don’t know. Sometimes I still am. Believe it or not I’m not that funny.”

Do you regret not doing it sooner?

“Sometimes but I don’t dwell on the past. Everything will come to fruition in divine time.”

Were your kids supportive?

“My kids are always  supportive of everything I do. They got that from me.”

What advice do you have for other women like you who have dreams and passion, but have important responsibilities that are stopping them?

“I know we hear this all the time but don’t give up, don’t let obstacles get in your way of achieving your dreams. Never let fear control you. Just do it! My cousin and I were discussing this the other day and he said fear is holding him back. I said release it and do what you love to do. I did and I am. It’s a mindset. Believe in yourself and you will do great things.”

“I found random jobs for new fashion designers and did a couple of fashion shows for various designers and Maison De Couture. I did a couple of indie horror films. Which landed me on imdb. I thought that was amazing.”
It is great that you did fashion shows and indie horror films! How was the experience?

“It was a great experience, lots of fun and a learning curve. I met a lot of wonderful women. The girl who plays my daughter in the movie that we just did, we did a fashion show together a couple of years ago. Small world.

I knew for sure that I was a natural in front of the camera, as I was when I was a kid. Memorizing lines is not my forte. You just have to  keep reading it over and over. It’s great to have a daughter old enough to be my go to when I need to learn my lines.”

Joining Max Agency

“I finally took the leap to sign with Max Agency. Thats when I met Alec, my improv coach who believed in me and gave me the opportunity to take his classes.

I cant even tell you the rush you get performing in front of strangers who I consider my family now. Its really nice to finally belong to a group of people who get me. They all have similar stories. Ive met so many wonderful people along the way.

When covid hit, it put a damper on my life. So I was going to make the most of the lock down. I decided to buy a guitar and start teaching myself how to play. Im still learning, its a difficult instrument to play. Ill get there one day.

One thing I learned is to never let fear stand in your way of achieving your goals and dreams. I have a creative soul the world needs to see.”
Stella also writes poetry which she hopes to publish soon! “I just needed to vent at first. I didn’t want to keep a journal so I started writing poetry. One of my poems was published on social media site. It wasn’t one of my favourites but they really liked it.”

Stella kindly shared one of he rpoems with us:

The stars align.

They shine so bright.

This feeling inside she can’t describe.

Her heart explodes with emotions she’s never felt before.

Everything is coming up roses. Finally!

From a bleak existence, there was no hope in sight.

Until one day she broke the chains that bound her.

She took control of her destiny.

Life pushed her down but she pushed back harder.

You can’t knock her down.

She will always win.

She is a champion!

Toronto Talent Agency- 7 Anti-Aging Tips for Your Skin

Isnt it everyones dream to remain looking youthful? A few good habits could make a big impact. Starting at an early age is best as prevention is always better. But it is  never too late to start.

Here are a Toronto model agencys 7 tips to start with:

1. Use a Gentler Face Wash

When choosing a face cleanser, go for a gentle formula. As you  get older, the skin tends to get less oily and more sensitive. Even if you still get acne as an adult, you still want to choose a gentle acne face wash.

Use a light touch when cleansing! Work the product in circular motion and avoid aggresive scrubbing as irritating your skin could accelerate aging.

2. Start Using Retinoids

As we age, our skin begins to lose collagen, which is the protein that maintains our skins elasticity. Loss of collagen leads to fine lines and eventually wrinkles. Experts recommend using a retinoid in your thirties, which is the prescription-strength version of vitamin A.

As it is a strong ingredient, you should gradually begin using it. Start with 2-3 times a week, and increasing the frequency to nightly as your skin gets used to it.

Gentler forms are available over-the-counter but it is important to not mix retinoids with other strong ingredients such as vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, or AHAs, as that could irritate the skin.

3. Upgrade Your SPF Routine

Regularly using SPF is the best way to prevent premature aging of the skin. Go for an SPF of 30 or higher to help keep away age spots and discoloration.

When choosing an SPF, avoid those containing alcohol and gels, which can dry out your skin. Look for a moisturizing formula that contains antioxidants instead.

4. Use a Richer Face Cream

Oil glands become less active with age. It is therefore essential to moisturize properly to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Switching to a richer cream will help keep water in the skin. Also, smooth down the formula to your neck and upper chest.

5. Watch What You Eat

Feed your skin with the right nutrients! Avoid any food that can dehydrate such as alcohol or too much coffee. Foods that are high in sugar and white carbohydrates break down glucose which can cause aging to happen faster. Go for more protein in your diet with ingredients such as fish, lean meat, vegetables, and beans. Foods that have a high level of vitamin C, such as tomatoes, also help to maintain youthful skin.

6. Consider Taking Supplements

It is always better to get nutrients through our diet. But supplements can give us a boost toward our goals, and keep us on track.

Omega-3s found in seafood, like salmon, helps to keep the skin moisturized and may prevent wrinkles. If you are not able to consume enough fish, consider taking fish oil or flaxseed supplements to replenish your skins oils.

As with any supplement, consult your doctor before using it.

7. Exfoliate Weekly

The skin sheds cells to reveal new skin regularly. That can slow down over time which leads to a dull complexion and rough patches. Help your skin by exfoliating a few times per week, with a gentle face scrub.

FAQ

Toronto acting Agency – Talent Spotlight – Cassandra T.

Our Talent Spotlight is for Cassandra T., who is a Toronto actor and model. She graduated from York Universitys Theatre program, specializing in devised theatre, playwriting, and dramaturgy.

Cassandras interest in the craft of acting began in grade 8 when her teacher got the class to create and perform a silent skit. When it was time to choose a high school to go to, she auditioned at an Arts school to pursue theatre and acting, but sadly, was not accepted.

Not letting that disappoint her, she took advantage of the drama classes that her school offered and auditioned for the school plays. She took the time to develop her craft.

Not being accepted after putting effort into an audition can be disappointing. How do you deal with this?

“I grew to realize that there will be a million No’s before I get that one perfect yes. Until then it’s important for me to stay positive. I know that one big job will come one day and It’s all a waiting game. In the meantime, I will be continuing my craft and just taking it one audition at a time. “

When it came time for college/uni, she auditioned for 2 universities- for which she practiced and rehearsed for months. Both had difficult requirements, but she felt good about her performance. She eventually got accepted to York Universitys program.

“I liked the aspect of York making everyone feel connected and accepted. Also, the people there just seemed more relaxed and happy. I was thrilled [to be accepted by York University]. I feel like everything happens for a reason.

My studies at york developed me into a strong collaborative artist and I am so thankful to all my professors and peers who have been there with me.  I wouldnt have been the actor I am today, I wouldnt have met the friends that I met and reunited with. “

How was it to study theatre? What was your routine like?

At York, it was very memorable and exciting but also stressful, of course . My routine included some of the following; I had a theatre history course, acting technique class that was based off devised theatre – which is a lot of internalization and body work.

In the morning of my specialized classes we would do yoga for half an hour to an hour! This was so relaxing and important for us to get connected to our breath and our body before diving into the work. Throughout the class we built characters and pieces that were highly improvised and collaborative.

My class only consisted of about 20 students in my specialized stream. I also specialized in script writing and dramaturgy which was a lot of fun and began writing a script that I really am excited to continue even after graduating.”

What is the most valuable lesson that you have learned during your time at York U?

“A very valuable lesson I learned at York.. I would say would be to always live in the moment, and to not take everything so seriously. My program was very competitive – this helped me to realize my worth and not to compare myself to others. Not everything lasts forever and if something bothers you in a single moment, do not stress. You probably wont remember it in a couple months or that same time next year.”

After graduating, Cassandra went into background work to become unionized. Her first gig was as a featured extra in the Disney Channel movie “Spin”, which just premiered a few weeks ago. She is featured in at least 10 shots as the DJ Judge.

Congratulations on your first gig! How was the experience?

“Thank you! It was my first background gig which was new all on its own. Out of about 100+ Background performers they picked out about 7 people including me! From that 7 I was then one of the final 2 chosen to be featured as a DJ Judge.”

Volunteer work and philanthropy

Other than her acting career at York, she also founded a sorority, named Gamma Delta Nu.

Cassandra shares, “We pride ourselves on Unity, loyalty, and respect. The reason I wanted to start this sorority was to meet new friends who have similar interests and completely different interests and a variety of backgrounds and bring them all together to form something unique.

One of the biggest stereotypes that people have when they think of Greek life (sororities and fraternities) is that we are all about partying and drinking. This might be true 5% of the time… but greek life is so much more and stems from years back.

One of our biggest accomplishments is hosting philanthropy for our chosen charity – Alzheimers Society of Canada and raising $800  in just our first year running our first event. We started with only five founding mothers, so we thought of ourselves as very accomplished. Now being a York and Gdn alumnae – I know with over 26 active girls I can only look forward to what is held in store for GDN (gamma delta Nu). “

Hobbies and Interests

Cassandra played soccer and football. She played on a soccer team all throughout highschool on the team and on a team outside of school. At University, she played intramural soccer and football with guys and girls – “this was alot of fun and helped me relieve stress in uni. it felt good to just run on the grass.”

In her free time, she makes vegan candles and soaps with 100% aromatherapy that she sells through her online business.

She is also getting into rollerskating (the quad wheels) which has been challenging, but she is determined to learn.
