Top Toronto model and talent management agency’s 5 Tips for shooting great headshots

Professional headshots are essential for a model or actor when going to castings and auditions.  These photos are what you submit to agencies and they are the first photos that a creative director or a casting director will evaluate. We are sharing five tips to help you get the most out of your photoshoot!

1- Focus on your unique features

As someone who aspires to be in modeling and acting projects, you may have an idea of what you will be best fit for. You could have a very unique hair type or facial feature that makes you special. Maybe your forte is your freckles or your physique. Use that to your advantage and practice posing in ways that enhance those features! It will help casting directors to notice the characteristics that they are searching for.

2- Show emotion

Acting and modeling requires you to play the role of different characters. Make sure to show different facial expressions to increase the chance that casting directors connect with the character that you are portraying. Showcase the roles that you want to play in your photos!

3- Go for a no-makeup look and a full glam

Modeling agencies look for minimal makeup looks where they can see your  natural features. You might also do side-profile shots in this look during your photoshoot. Also go for a full glam look, especially if you aspire to be in beauty campaigns for makeup brands.

4- Consider the overall look and your goals when choosing your outfits

What you wear will play an important role in how your headshots turn out. If you are after a beauty campaign for example, consider showing your shoulders! It is a safe choice to keep it simple. Avoid logos and busy patterns. Go for a color that suits you, your skintone, your eye color, hair color, and so on.

5- Good quality over quantity

Get your headshots taken by a professional photographer who is experienced and uses commercial-grade equipment. Consider whether they have studio lighting or if they will be shooting in natural light. Professional photos will ensure that you are taken seriously.

how to self tape

Dos and Donts in shooting a self-taped audition.

We have provided simple guidelines below to help you produce great self-tapes.

DO

  • Be professional and prepared when you tape yourself. Treat this audition the same as you would if you were physically in the room with the casting director.

  • Record your audition in front of a solid coloured curtain or a blank wall. Too much clutter in the background can distract from your performance. Also, be aware your outfit should not blend or contrast with the colour of your backdrop.

  • Find a quality reader. Make sure your reader stands behind the camera, to ensure your focus and positioning is towards the camera. Your reader should not be seen on camera unless requested.

DONT

  • Dont use a webcam, we recommend using a digital camcorder that fits your budget and have a peer operate the camera for you.

  • Overhead fluorescent lights create deep shadows on your face which can make you look aged or change your appearance completely. Ideally, use two incandescent lights (bulbs with filaments). One as a key light, set to the opposite side of the camera a little farther away and pointed at your face.  If you are filming in a bigger space and need more lighting, set a second light opposite side of the camera, pointed at your side.

  • Castings has requested a certain number of takes and/or scenes. Doing more than is asked could be considered presumptuous by the casting director. Dont do more than the castings has asked for.
