A love for storytelling got Anna to start filming little movies in her room, and now that she is older, she is pursuing her dream to become an actor. She fell in love with acting when she first saw girls her age on screen in the movie Annie (1982) and realized that she could pursue acting as a career.
Anna:There has always been something special about acting but I never got to pinpoint exactly what it is that makes it so exciting for me. Perhaps it is getting to be someone else for just a moment…escaping my reality…or telling an important story. I am still figuring that out.
I would force my friends to be a part of my tiny little movies. And when that wasnt the case, I would use my stuffed animals to portray ex-boyfriends, best friends, villains, family members, etc. As embarrassing and unprofessional those videos of myself are, I hope to one day look back at them and see how much I have grown.
Anna was born in Toronto to an Argentine family, but she has also lived in Argentina, Mexico, and Peru. She has been lucky enough to learn about different cultures by traveling to many different countries with her family from a very young age.
She is now 17 and is looking forward to learning opportunities around the world once it is time for college. She wishes to keep traveling and learning about the craft of performing in different corners of the world.
Growing up in an international family, I got the opportunity to experience many different forms of performance work that have helped me gain a better understanding of the impact a culture can have on any and every single art expression. Moving on, I hope to embrace this in my work and hopefully inspire others to do so as well. Now that I am a little older, I am lucky enough that I can start working towards this dream of mine.
MAX: What do you like to do in your spare time?
Anna: I love fashion and when I am bored I will just play loud music in my room and create different outfits. I document the ones that I like the best and then, to get inspired, I look back at the pictures to go out with friends, family, going to school, or any other event. I guess I just love playing dress-up.
I also love watching films and recorded theatre performances. And when doing so, if there is one I consider a masterpiece, I will add it to my list of favorite films, tv shows, and plays. Whenever I am feeling uninspired I will go back to my list and watch one of those performances as I remain to be mesmerized each and every time I watch them. Sometimes I will even choose an actor whom I admire and watch many of their projects to observe and learn from the techniques they use in order to portray different characters.
Now that Oscar season is approaching I will be watching as many of the nominated films as I can in order to be well informed for when the big night comes. Every year, I like putting on comfortable clothes, turning on the TV, and watching the award ceremony with my favorite snack. This year will be no exception to this tradition!
MAX: What is your dream role?
Anna: There are two characters that I have always wished to play. The first one would be a character who lived or is based on a historical event. Period pieces have always been special to me. One thing is to learn about a historical event in school, but it is a completely different story and impact to see it come back to life onscreen or on stage. I have always been drawn to be part of such a reenactment of a historical event told by relatable characters.
The second would be a character that is hurting; that has recently gone through something very impactful in life and is finding healing within and/or others. Although that sounds like an intimidating role to take on, those are the characters that have most touched me when growing up. So, I would love to take on a challenge like that.
MAX: What is the best advice that you have received about getting into the industry?
Anna: To be persistent and not take rejection personally. It was given to me by a teacher, and this advice stuck with me ever since. He told me something along the lines of… “Rejection is very common when trying to make it into the industry. Getting used to it is the quickest way of booking a job. Although good acting is key to getting the attention of a casting director, there are other factors that go into getting the job, such as age, height, hair color, ethnicity, voice e.t.c. So sometimes, although you gave your all in an audition, you just might not be what they are looking for and thats okay! Dont take it personally. Move on, and audition for the next role. Just because you were not the right fit for that character doesnt mean you cant play all of the rest. “
Annas acting experience
When I was younger I performed in a musical theatre play called “Qué Plantón. I have also been involved in school plays and curriculums. Just last year, I finished the IGCSE Theatre diploma and am currently involved in the IB Theatre program. I have performed monologues, improvised pieces, Shakespeare soliloquies, practitioner studies, and scripted pieces. I also am participating in a Shakespeare monologue competition.
One of my most memorable performances would have to be “Qué Plantón” because it was the first time I was on stage in front of a large audience. Which, as a young girl, felt very nerve-racking and yet it became such a calling and thrilling experience… I truly felt like I belonged. I also really enjoyed performing a monologue from “Prodigal Son” called “Someone Saw Me”. I chose this monologue to perform in a school assessment because I related to the character of Jim. So much so, that memorizing my lines came very easy to me because it felt like I myself was saying them. I got very good feedback from that performance and it stayed close to my heart ever since.
